A Novel Technique: Ultrasonography-Guided Botulinum Toxin Injection in Adductor Type Spasmodic Dysphonia

چکیده
Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a rare disease caused by focal dystonia in the laryngeal muscles. The adductor type SD (AdSD), which affects thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, found 80% of all patients. For them, voice therapy and medication are less effective definitive surgical treatment has not been established yet. Botulinum toxin injection considered gold standard treatment. However, patients require regular injections every 3-6 months whenever effect botulinum disappears. Therefore, it essential that injecting safe, comfortable, accurate. Injections usually performed under guidance electromyography or laryngoscopy. Ultrasonography (US) familiar device to otorhinolaryngologists recently used evaluate structures. While US only for diagnosis, can also be Here, we describe novel technique inject into TA muscle via trans-cartilaginous approach AdSD.

Treatment Efficacy of Electromyography versus Fiberscopy-Guided Botulinum Toxin Injection in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia Patients: A Prospective Comparative Study
INTRODUCTION This study prospectively evaluates and compares the treatment efficacy of botulinum toxin injection under electromyography guidance (EMG group) and percutaneous botulinum toxin injection under flexible fiberscopic guidance (fiberscopy group). METHODS Thirty patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD), who had never received treatment, were randomly allocated into EMG- or fi...
متن کاملVocal aging and adductor spasmodic dysphonia: Response to botulinum toxin injection
Aging of the larynx is characterized by involutional changes which alter its biomechanical and neural properties and create a biological environment that is different from younger counterparts. Illustrative anatomical examples are presented. This natural, non-disease process appears to set conditions which may influence the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injection and our expectations for its...
متن کاملExpert System-Type Approach to Voice Disorders: Scheduling Botulinum Toxin Treatment for Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia
One of the most debilitating disorders is adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD), a voice disorder caused by involuntary movements of the muscles of the larynx (voice box). For treating ADSD, botulinum toxin (BT) injections turned out to be very useful. However, the effects of BT are highly variable, so at present, there is no objective criterion of when such a BT treatment is necessary. It is the...

OBJECTIVES In this preliminary prospective study, we compared unilateral and bilateral thyroarytenoid muscle injections of Botulinum toxin (Dysport) in 31 patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia, who had undergone more than 5 consecutive Dysport injections (either unilateral or bilateral) and had completed 5 concomitant self-rated efficacy and complication scores questionnaires related to th...
متن کاملPoint-touch technique of botulinum toxin injection for the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia.
Intralaryngeal injections of botulinum toxin (Botox), under electromyographic guidance, have emerged as an effective treatment for adductor spasmodic dysphonia. To remain effective, these injections must be repeated every 3 to 9 months as the symptoms recur. One drawback to the current method is the need for electromyographic confirmation of needle placement into the thyroarytenoid muscle. This...
